Yes!

In every situation, it’s always better to try to achieve your nutrition goals with food first. Supplementation is just that. It’s meant to supplement your diet. But if you need a little help with hitting your protein goal, a protein supplement can be a good go-to.

The most common protein supplements are protein powders derived from whey or casein, which together make up the protein found in dairy. Because of this, if you are allergic, intolerant or just don’t digest dairy well, you may find you have similar issues with whey or casein. Whey and casein protein powders are great choices, though, because they are what are known as “complete proteins.” This means they contain all 9 essential amino acids (EAAs), which are proteins that you have to consume because your body does not make them. You can get your EAA from your diet by eating meat, poultry, dairy, egg, fish, and some plant foods, like quinoa, buckwheat, hemp seeds, chia seeds, and soy. However, protein powders can help supplement your diet to ensure you’re getting the proper amount.

For tracking purposes, all protein powders and supplements should be tracked and counted towards your macro goals.
